A renal mass, or tumor, is an abnormal growth in the kidney. Some renal masses are benign (not cancerous) and some are malignant (cancerous).

Healthcare workers should never palpate the abdomen of a child with Wilms’ tumor, as this increases the risk of rupturing the encapsulated tumor, which could cause cancer cells to spread to other areas of the body. A preoperative tissue biopsy should also be avoided.
What are the common presenting signs of a Wilms tumor?
Swelling or a large lump in the abdomen (belly) This is often the first sign of a Wilms tumor. Parents may notice swelling or hardness in the belly while bathing or dressing the child. The lump is sometimes large enough to be felt on both sides of the belly. It’s usually not painful, but it might be in some children.
How do you diagnose Wilms tumor?
In addition to a physical examination, the following tests may be used to diagnose a Wilms tumor:
- Blood/urine tests.
- X-ray.
- Ultrasound.
- Computed tomography (CT or CAT) scan.
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
- Bone x-ray and bone scan.
- Surgery or biopsy.
- Chromosome tests.
Can you cure Wilms tumor?
Overall, about 9 of 10 children with Wilms tumors are cured. A great deal of progress has been made in treating this disease in recent decades. Much of this progress is the result of children with Wilms tumors taking part in clinical trials of new treatments.
Does Wilms tumor run in families?
Wilms tumor can also run in families, although this is rare. Talk to your doctor if you have any relatives who have had a Wilms tumor. If you do, the children in your family may need to have regular ultrasound exams of the abdomen.
What are the signs and symptoms of Wilms tumor?
But most children with Wilms’ tumor experience one or more of these signs and symptoms: An abdominal mass you can feel. Abdominal swelling. Abdominal pain….Other signs and symptoms may include:
- Fever.
- Blood in the urine.
- Nausea or vomiting or both.
- Constipation.
- Loss of appetite.
- Shortness of breath.
- High blood pressure.
How is Wilms tumor diagnosed?
How is Wilms’ tumor diagnosed? If your child’s doctor suspects Wilms’ tumor or another kidney tumor, your child will first have imaging tests — such as an ultrasound, chest x-ray, CT scan, or MRI — to see if there is a mass, and if so, whether it has spread to the nearby lymph nodes and/or lungs.
Where does Wilms tumor spread to?
Wilms Tumor can spread to lymph nodes in the abdomen and to the lung, and rarely to the liver, but does not spread to the bones, bone marrow, or brain.
Where does Wilms tumor metastasis?
The tumor can be very large before it’s found. And it may spread (metastasize) to other body tissues. The most common site for Wilms tumor to spread to is the lungs. But it may also spread to the liver, lymph nodes, other kidney, brain, and bones.
